Contactless payment on public transport

Frequently asked questions

You can purchase a ticket on public transport using contactless bank cards such as "Mastercard," "Maestro," "Visa," or "Visa Electron" in the ticket validation machines. Contactless payment is possible if the card has the contactless payment logo on validator. Additionally, the cardholder must have the contactless payment feature enabled. Payments can be made either with a physical card or with smart devices (such as a watch or phone).

You can purchase a public transport ticket using a contactless payment card on all ticket validation machines installed in Vilnius city buses and trolleybuses. Passengers should ensure that the ticket validation machine supports the card they have. If you board public transport and find that this option is not available for you, you can purchase a ticket via the "m.Ticket" or "Trafi" apps.

In Vilnius, you can only purchase a 60-minute ticket (cost: €0.90) on public transport using a contactless bank card. Discounts are not applied to these tickets.

  1. Remove the card from your bag/wallet or other holder.
  2. Ensure you are tapping only one card against the machine. If multiple cards are tapped at the same time, the machine may not detect the card you intend to use.
  3. Tap your payment card on the machine.
  4. Do not move or lift the card up and down, as this might interfere with or interrupt the card detection process.
  5. Hold the card against the machine until you hear a sound, then you can remove the card. A green confirmation on the screen and a long beep indicate that the ticket purchase was successful. If you see a red "X" and hear two short beeps, it means the payment failed.
